Anthracene is a solid polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon consisting of three benzene rings of formula C14H10.
It is a component of coal tar.Coal tar, which contains around 1.5% anthracene. Anthracene is converted mainly to anthraquinone, used as a precursor to dyes. Anthracene is a organic semiconductor is used as a detectors of high energy photons, electrons and alpha particles.It is also used in wood preservatives, insecticides, and coating materials. Anthracene is colorless but exhibits a blue fluorescence under ultraviolet light.
